Learn more about Block Island

Bicycles rule the roads on this New England isle, where lighthouses stand sentinel over dramatic coastal bluffs. Mohegan Bluffs offer heart-stopping views from 200-foot cliffs, while Crescent Beach provides gentler pleasures with its golden sands and clear waters. The Nature Conservancy didn't designate this as one of 'The Last Great Places' without reason – nearly half the island remains gloriously undeveloped. Summer brings an explosion of visitors, transforming the sleepy winter population of 900 into a bustling 10,000. North Light and Southeast Light bookend your explorations, while Old Harbor's seafood restaurants serve the morning's catch. Visit in July for the parade and fireworks, or any other time for blissful isolation.

Dodge Cottage

Dodge Cottage

8/10 Good
"Dodge Cottage is pretty bare bones, but offers a clean and very convenient place to stay. Lots of parking. The room was very clean, but there were some maintenance issues, like crumbling drywall in the shower. The room had its own mini-split AC, which was nice and cold. It could have been clearer that we had to check in at their sister location, The 1661, which was a hike uphill. Had we not bumped in to housekeeping at the cottage, we would have never known. But for price and location, it was comfortable and best location."

Champlin's Marina & Resort

Champlin's Marina & Resort

8/10 Good
"Nice property adjacent to the “salt pond” for watersports. Large pool. Main lodging is off ferry landing with a separate building up the hill. Kayaks and bikes are available at no charge. Complimentary Hotel jitney takes you to Old Harbor for dining, shopping and motorbikes. The Landing is a restaurant on the property. Dinner, drinks and snacks are available for purchase. The dinner we had there was very good. A little shop on the pier also sells a limited menu for breakfast, lunch and snacks. Enjoyed my two night stay, but not much going on when it rains."

"We went to BI for 2 days mid week before Labor Day weekend. The hotel could not be situated better. We had an oceanview king and the room was tiny, but well appointed. Since our goal was not to spend much time in the room the tight quarters didn't matter. I will say the staff was young and seemed sort of ambivalent, but also no big deal."
