Downtown Bloomington blends college-town energy with small-city charm around Indiana University's Sample Gates. Students and locals mingle along Kirkwood Avenue, ducking into record stores and catching shows at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The courthouse square hosts farmers markets and festivals, while the B-Line Trail offers a scenic path for cyclists exploring the district's colorful murals and tree-lined streets. You'll find everything from late-night pizza joints to farm-to-table restaurants within easy walking distance. Boutique hotels and B&Bs provide cozy accommodations with Midwestern hospitality. The compact, pedestrian-friendly layout makes car-free exploration simple, with free campus buses connecting major attractions.

Eastside
Bloomington's Eastside offers an authentic slice of suburban living just a stone's throw from Indiana University. Tree-lined streets with modest homes create a peaceful retreat from campus bustle. Cultural attractions like the IU Opera and Ballet Theater provide entertainment without the downtown crowds. Students and families mingle in this relaxed neighborhood where everyday life unfolds at an unhurried pace. Budget-friendly dining spots serve comfort food and international cuisines that won't break the bank. Accommodation options range from no-frills motels to homey vacation rentals at prices that beat downtown rates. While a car is handy, bike lanes near campus make two-wheeled exploration easy for anyone wanting to experience local life.

Old Northeast Downtown
Old Northeast Downtown blends Victorian charm with vibrant university energy. Students debate over coffee in cozy cafes while historic limestone buildings house independent bookstores with creaking wooden floors. The neighborhood pulses with academic life from cycling professors to evening poetry readings. Mature oak trees create natural canopies over brick sidewalks. The area offers student-friendly bistros featuring affordable comfort food and farm-to-table restaurants. Visitors can stay in bed & breakfasts housed in historic homes with personalized service. Getting around is easy with high walkability and Bloomington Transit bus routes connecting campus and downtown areas.

Indiana University's cultural gems like the Opera and Ballet Theater are just a short stroll away, perfect for travelers who want both college-town energy and peaceful nights. The neighborhood offers a genuine slice of local life with minimal tourist infrastructure. While dining options are scarce within Elm Heights itself, downtown eateries are just minutes away. Home2 Suites by Hilton Bloomington
"Great place to stay for a quick visit."
Super 8 by Wyndham Bloomington University Area
"Hey"
MainStay Suites Bloomington near University
"Great location for IU family weekend, super clean, able to bring our dog, very spacious rooms, little details—little repairs needed here and there were noted. Waited last minute to book on our way there and paid a much more “reasonable” price for two nights (still crazy cost). Lots of good walkable restaurants in the area. The hotel itself for location and the event going on, was perfect for what it was. Would not otherwise pay what we did for this particular hotel. But it was ok."
Grant Street Inn
"Breakfast is amazing here and it is always clean and the location cannot be beat!"
Best Value Inn
"The owners Krishna (or aka - Kenny) and his wife, were lovely and super helpful! The place was well maintained, clean and the room/beds were super comfortable. Walking distance to IU stadium, and close to campus. Very comfy, and convenient. Would stay there again!"
Courtyard by Marriott Bloomington
"Staff was very nice (of course, we’re in the Midwest!) and location to campus was great!"
Graduate by Hilton Bloomington
"What I like about the property was convenient it was closer to get to the University and you can walk to town. What I don’t like about the property where the staff or maybe just a couple wasn’t that accommodating and way too overpriced hotel!"
Hyatt Place Bloomington
"The manager of front was absolutely amazing. Helped me with our issue that we had resolved it and even made the situation better great hospitality very friendly will come back again."
