Great hosts

The woman working there during my stay was very welcoming and accommodating, created a great atmosphere for guests

The family running the guest house was so kind and helpful. The two children were delightful. Busy and active but very respectful and inquisitive at the same time. Although not the Ritz Carlton, the guesthouse was clean and comfortable. I would certainly stay again.

Clean but a bit dated. Nice welcome. It‘s not worth 500 € if you need to travel there on a saturday or any other busy day.

Eigelsborg should update their photos on Expedia, the quaint dining area looks nothing like the photo. It should be stated up front, that this is a bare-bones backpacker’s facility, you have to rent pillow, blanket & towel.

I did not stay in this hotel. EXPEDIA must not include this hotel in your list...because this hotel is not telling their guests beforehand that NO BLANKET is supplied. I have to rent beddings and pillows and towels...disgusting.

Read the small print. Even though we were a family of 6 checking late instead of charging $60 for a late check in they charged us $360 for each person. It is in the rules but crazy - same situation if you actually want an old blanket and pillow. On the positive side it is possible to walk downtown from the location.

The room was dirty. I was emailed a list of curt (verging on disgusting) rules two days before trip when it was too late to cancel. I was changed an extra 6600 on arrival and then staff attempted to recharge on check out. There were hidden charges for towels sheets pillows bedding etc. it was worse than staying in a hostel.
kathleen, 5-night trip

6/10 Good

An additional kr3,000 for bedding and kr4,000 to park for just a few hours doubled the cost of the stay.

Nice location with great access to the city center and bus stop number 13. Nice staff and very responsive.

The family was very nice, it was clean. The stairs to the third floor were narrow and a bit steep. We had luggage for a month and this was our last stop, despite being in late 60s we were strong enough to take it up. There was NO shower on our floor. Well there WAS a shower on our floor, but we weren't allowed to use it.. We had to listen or go down and check when the shower was free on the second floor. Going down the stairs one night carrying my things l was thinking, YIKES l hope l don't fall. The shower area had NO chair, bench or stool for your items! There were hooks on the wall one of which was broken. There was only a toilet and sink on the third floor, the handle on the door to the toilet and sink room was coming apart from the inside.

We checked into this property knowing that we would be staying in a hostel, not a proper hotel. However, this place was simply substandard, even as a hostel. The reception and dining area was cluttered and dirty. Outside the hostel was a large tent and a lot of clutter. The shower and toilets were clean. The lady at the reception charged us unreasonably for everything: - $17 for renting a bath towel (they would not provide it to guest for free) - $17 per bag for holding it for 3 hours after our checkout (first time I have seen guests being charged to hold bags anywhere in the world) - $17 (2,000 ISK) each time for paying via credit card instead of cash. - Charging extra for arranging a bus from Reykjavik to Airport. She was charging us for everything she could get away with. I have been to other hostels and this is not how they treat their guests.
Samir, 1-night trip

2/10 Poor

This Egilsborg guesthouse is the worst I have ever stayed in. A few days before check-in, I was informed that I would have to pay a city tax of 1,000 ISK per day upon arrival. I was also told that I must either bring my own sleeping bag or rent their bedding and towel for 2,000 ISK per day. If paying by credit card instead of cash, the amount is even higher. Why were these charges not clearly listed as booking conditions? It feels deceptive. The condition of the guesthouse is terrible. The shower is controlled by a button—press it, and you get only 15–30 seconds of water before it stops. You must press the button repeatedly, and each time you have no idea if the water will be hot or cold. I honestly wonder why Expedia would even list this property. It should be removed entirely.

It was ok in cleanliness, nothing bad comes to mind but it was not the cleanest place i have been.

Hostel at Hotel Prices

Expedia needs to review this place. Egilsborg should be listed and priced as a Hostel. Listed as "shared bath": 17 rooms, 50 guests - with THREE (3) Toilets and Two (2) showers. That is not a Guesthouse. We were charged $180 per night for a $50 per night hostel situation.

2/10 Poor

The owner is rude, not at all friendly, he was disrespectful, he does not comply with what he offers. I’d like cancel my reservation

Not so nice, but convenient.

If you are looking for basic bed, basic sink and basic service and attitude for one night, this guesthouse will cover it. We stayed in guesthouse around the country, and pretty much everyone was much better than this one. It felt like you were staying in the bathroom of a gas station. Not worth the stay.

2/10 Poor

Don't go there

Very close to strip club. Very loud hotel, you can hear talk, and noise through the thin walls and doors. No toilet and bath in each room, toilet and bathroom is shared.

4/10 Fair

The place is not adequately kept and looks terrible. I got many e-mails insisting on paying in cash and pushing me to pay for parking on the property when parking in the street and the area, as the whole country, is highly safe. She insisted so much that we paid even though we did not use it and left the car in another place. They also offered a drive to the airport and the driver was nice and courteous.
Monica, 1-night trip

1. If you want bedding it’s 6,000 isk (about $50) extra. (Towels, pillows, and blanks/flat sheets not provided unless you pay for them) 2. Added extra to Expedia booking. 1,000 isk for tourism tax at check out. Note the tourism tax for Rekyavik is 666 isk according to google. 3. The place smelled like cat pee, although we did not see a cat. 4. I took pictures of the bed with unclean fitted sheet. 5. We arrived at the place between 6pm and 7pm the staff was not present or onsite. Buzzed people in based off booking only. Key left in open room unlocked. 8. While hotel seems to be still under construction, we question if the builders are certified as hooks on room just put into drywall not studs. Nor did they use drywall anchors. 9. Common area was dirty with a sink full of unwashed dishes when we arrived. Refrigerator full of food but smelled foul and had obviously not been cleaned recently. Good: The area close to the place has a Bonus and you can get groceries They are close to the bus to access. There are other guest houses in the area and we stayed in one, it was much better and was not a scam.
