We were in Santa Margherita for a wedding, and on arrival discovered that another couple we knew had also chosen this hotel, a reassuring sign in itself. After unloading (see "needed improvements" below), we found everything in excellent shape and recently renovated: the A/C worked, bath was very nice, it was even roomy for a European hotel. My friends and I loved staying at Hotel Vesuvio. It's just a five minute walk to the train station to enjoy all of Cinque Terra and the ferry stop to go to Portofino and Santa Margarita was across the street. There are plenty of restaurants, some cool 11th century ruins, and a daily farmers market all within walking distance. We has a "family suite" with a balcony overlooking beautiful harbor. We stayed at Hotel Stella for 4 nights in July while on our 30th Anniversary trip and had a wonderful experience. Our room was on the top floor attached to the upper patio/balcony with an amazing view of the ocean. Stephan, the owner, was extremely helpful. He gave us information about restaurants, how to get about town, and was a fantastic host. This was a great little hotel. Very impressed with the staff. I had an early morning train before the breakfast room was open. When I checked out the desk agent fixed me a cup of coffee and gave me a sweet. That was service!
I really enjoyed the stay at Hotel Miramare! Excellent and helpful staff. Very pretty and spacious lobby areas. Because we were three people they moved us for no extra charge to a huge apartment on the fourth floor that could easily sleep five! These suites are very nice and luxury. Check in is a block away at Miramare hotel. We walked here from train station. Breakfast was very upscale and delicious with a beautiful view of the ocean through the picture window. We loved the easy train access to Cinque Terre (without the crowds) and Portofino, Santa Margarita.
