Learn more about Hilo
Beneath the shadow of two volcanoes, this bayfront town offers a slice of authentic Hawaii away from resort crowds. Wander through Japanese gardens at Liliuokalani Park before sampling exotic fruits at the bustling farmers market. Rainbow Falls thunders just minutes from downtown, where water crashes 80 feet into a pool surrounded by wild ginger. The 'Imiloa Astronomy Center explains how ancient Hawaiians navigated by stars, while the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo houses rare tropical creatures. Time a visit for the Merrie Monarch Festival to witness the world's premier hula competition. For the ultimate day trip, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where Kilauea's glowing lava fields demonstrate nature's raw creative power.

Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel
"The hotel building is a little dated, but we could see that they are doing their best to maintain it well. Even without air conditioning, the fans worked surprisingly well and we were quite comfortable. Our room was spacious, and the location was wonderful—just steps from the beautiful seashore and surrounded by gorgeous tropical gardens. We especially enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty of the property. Overall, it was a pleasant and relaxing stay."

Hilo Bay Oceanfront B&B
"Beautiful setting on the water. Friendly and helpful property owners. Very clean and comfortable accommodations. Will stay there again."
Aarons Cottage
"Second time staying at Aaron’s Cottage. This time cottage #4 with the 4 person set up for my wife and I and our two daughters. Little kitchenette with practically everything. Also have access to community kitchen. Look to see if Aaron’s has availability the next time this local family head to Hilo!"
Arnott's Lodge
"only issue there was is the ac did not get very cold. i set the temperatre to 64 degrees, which is the coldest setting, and the room felt like 70 degrees. also not a big deal unless you arriveing on a late flight, office hours are only 9-5, checking in after 5 is an issue"
Hilo Town Inn
"We liked the room and liked the location - just steps to the Farmer's Market. This is more of a note to Expedia than to the Hilo Downtown Inn. This is the second place we have rented through Expedia that didn't tell us we'd need to negotiate stairs. My wife has trouble navigating stairs. I think the property and Expedia have an ethical and perhaps legal obligation to inform potential renters about the stairs."
Hilltop Vacation Rental
"Nice old plantation style house with a beautiful yard and view of Hilo. Staff was nice and helpful, even tho I arrived a day and a half late. Very peaceful place to stay, with birds chirping in the morning and coqui frogs croaking at night."
