La Laguna del Lagarto Eco-Lodge
10/10 Excellent
"Great place if you are looking to do bird watching and other nature related activities. The bird feeders not only attract an incredible amount of birds but also some other mammals such as the Agouti and the Coati. The area is known for sightings of the King Vulture, all types of toucans, tanagers, parrots, etc. Including a Cayman that lives in the lagoon. They also have trails. Food was good, specially breakfast."

"This is a barely discovered gem, a rare destination that will leave you with lifelong memories. We stayed here 9 years ago, and returned this summer. The rainforest location is unique. We stayed in a treehouse, with frequent visits from spider monkeys and seemingly endless species of birds. We partook for a second time the riverboat tour through the local rainforest, up through the Nicaragua border. We saw spectacular macaws, toucans, and numerous other bird species. We encountered crocodiles, circling vultures over cow pastures, a green river snake swimming at the town boat dock. We saw other monkey species hanging out in the trees, iguanas… But perhaps most memorable to us was the genuineness of the Eco Lodge staff. Many are local, and share with us their pride in their community. Their true warmth allows us to experience the rainforest, not as a visiting tourist, but as a proud local. The guides are wonderful! They are smart, engaging and passionate. Even on our return boat ride across the river to the parking area, the staff member took a slight detour to point out colorful macaws eating fruit in a tree on the riverbank. We came with our family, there were tourists of all ages, from young children to older retirees. Our binoculars and telephoto lenses got quite the workout! While we are not professional birdwatchers, the diversity was remarkable. And, we found fellow tourists to be grounded, appreciative of life and the opportunity. Thank you staff!!!"

"Location & Property: The hotel is located about 15 minutes from Puerto Viejo, on the road towards La Fortuna. The property is very pleasant and well maintained, with the rooms spread across different cabins connected by paths. The setting feels peaceful and surrounded by nature, making it a nice place to relax and enjoy the jungle. Room: Our room was clean and comfortable, although quite basic. The bed was comfortable and the room had air conditioning, but there was no TV or fridge. The bathroom was clean and functional, with a shower and basic toiletries. Breakfast: Breakfast was fairly standard, with coffee, juices, and a selection of hot and cold dishes. Nothing particularly special, but it was more than enough to get the day started. Facilities & Surroundings: There is a nice swimming pool, although we didn't get to use it because of the heavy rain during our stay. The property also has several paths where you can walk around and enjoy the surrounding jungle. There is even a pond with alligators. We went to have a look, although unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to see any. All things considered, this is a nice place to stay if you're exploring the area or simply looking for a comfortable stopover. It would also be a good option when travelling between Tortuguero and La Fortuna."
Aranwa Sarapiquí Rainforest Lodge

"The grounds here were very pretty- several trails where you could bird watch, and the view from the infinity pool was very nice. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only things we found to lower my rating slightly were that the rooms (depending on where you're assigned) can be a little way down a path and there didn't seem to be a golf cart/similar vehicle to help you with your bags. I had a group of teenagers, so hauling their own luggage wasn't a problem except that it was raining the night we stayed so everyone got wet moving luggage to our rooms. Also, you drive to the end of the road to register (and this is where you unload your luggage to take to your rooms), but then you've got to park your car in a lot closer to the main entrance, so there is extra walking involved if you had mobility issues. I know the beauty of the place is that it's surrounded by nature, but in one of our rooms we found 3 centipede/millipede type creatures (2 on the floor and 1 on the wall), and one other insect that weren't there when we first got into the room, but later likely came in via the crack under the exterior door. This freaked my daughters out as we found them right before bedtime, so if you were insect averse you might consider a location in a less outdoorsy place."

"We spent a wonderful five nights here in a family room and it was a truly immersive rainforest experience we will never forget. You are deep in the forest and an abundance of wildlife is all around-including some in your room or on your terrace so you need to be comfortable with that. We saw many toucans, hummingbirds, howler monkeys, an anteater, possums, and many jungle insects right from our room and immediately outside it, The howler monkeys wake you at 5am every day with deafening calls which is really special- just don’t expect a lie- in! Facilities are basic and a bit run down and be prepared to be wet and muddy all the time, particularly if you do the resort’s trails into the jungle,- quite overgrown and not well marked unlike some of the larger rainforest attractions, so lots of care needed and not for the faint hearted. The staff is amazing and really made our stay magical, They were all so knowledgeable and helpful and really went out of their way to chat and make sure we had everything we needed, particularly Sergio and Suri. Breakfast and dinner were lovely buffets with a huge amount of choice of both local and international foods. I would only note two things for improvement about our stay- firstly would be to change the bed linen after 2-3 days for guests staying longer like us as the constant humidity and dirt makes it needed. Secondly to tell guests at check in how to radio security at night if required as no staff are on site at night."
