The Botanical Gardens of Rome rests on the hills of the Janiculum and features several greenhouses and gardens in addition to a significant collection of coniferous trees. The gardens, which overlook the Palazzo Corsini, were established in 1883 and are now operated by the Sapienza University of Rome.
The Botanical Gardens of Rome were preceded by the Papal Botanical Gardens that date back to the Renaissance. The current gardens were formed by a merging of the private garden of Palazzo Corsini and the Papal Gardens after the palace became the property of the Italian state.

The Botanical Gardens of Rome houses over 3,000 species of plants and includes a Japanese garden, monumental trees, bamboo groves, and a medical garden that consists of over 300 species of medicinal plants. Especially notable species are Himalayan cedar, Hidalgo blue sotol, green sotol, cockspur coral tree and oriental sweetgum.
Along the grounds, there are a variety of greenhouses that contain a vast collection of cacti, carnivorous plants and tropical plants, such as euphorbia and orchids. As you stroll through the 12 hectares of the gardens, you'll encounter a valley of ferns and palms as well as many types of foliage arrangements.
