The Timken Museum of Art spotlights American and European works in addition to famous Russian artists from as early as the 1300s. The museum also offers guided audio tours where expert docents provide in-depth information on the works, the lives of the artists, the works' historical background, and much more.

For those who enjoy architecture, the museum is housed in a stunning, symmetrical building drafted by Frank Hope Jr., which features modern glass, bronze, and travertine elements. The grounds also feature a beautiful garden court and a lily pond.

The collection at the Timken Museum of Art is well known for the sole painting by Rembrandt found in Southern California as well as for works by Jacques-Louis David, Guercino, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and many others. You will find works from renowned Spanish, French, Russian, Dutch, American, and Italian artists from as early as the 1300s.

The museum also offers rotating exhibits that have included "Blessed Beasts and Curious Creatures," "Robert Wilson Video Portraits," and "Monet’s Etretat: Destination and Motif." The Timken Museum of Art offers regularly scheduled lectures and presentations that examine select artists and themes.

Your visit to the Timken Museum of Art is free of charge, though donations are greatly appreciated. You can find the museum located in Balboa Park next to the Plaza de Panama at the end of Laurel Street. Balboa Park offers free tram service between the park's many attractions.

While you are visiting the park, you may enjoy a stop at the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Air and Space Museum, or the San Diego Natural History Museum. There are 13 museums in the 12-acre cultural park as well as playgrounds, dog parks, hiking, gardens, and beautiful picnic areas.
