Great historic hotel with lots of character. Our room was very comfortable and well decorated. The hotel is wonderfully quiet but perfectly located to explore Napier. A nice touch was the decanter of port in the library which you can help yourself to before bedtime.

The hotel is the ideal art deco experience in the Art Deco Capital of the world. The room was excellent and the bed super comfortable. We especially loved taking port in the library with our fellow guests each evening. 5 stars

Nice rooms and friendly staff. Five stars. I asked them why Expedia couldn’t cancel one of my three rooms after an erroneous booking online (called within 12 hours to fix, still 5 weeks from our stay). Was told that “we can’t cancel - only Expedia can.” Got the same story from Expedia “we can’t cancel without hotel approval”). Expedia claims they called twice and cancel was denied. Hotel says they never called. One star. SOMEONE IS LYING. Zero stars. Parking fee is added if you have a vehicle. Three stars. Location is great - near many venues and restaurants. Four stars.

The room was nice and clean but the bathroom is fully tiled with no heat so it was freezing. This would be fine in summer but definitely not in winter

Excellent preservation of historic bank turned into hotel. Kept the charming Victorian elements in this Art Deco city. Excellent restaurant (Curchill) with very good wine list.

My wife and I have stayed at the County 8 - 9 times since 2009. Lovely art deco style hotel. Outstanding meals (try the lamb rump). Staff are just great. Angela is just the most welcoming and friendly hotel owner you will ever meet. Hotel is in the heart of the Napier CBD and across the road from the Marine Parade. Great secure parking across the street. Unbeatable.

6/10 Good

Building itself was in keeping with the town history art nouveau style , we spent just the one night on a Monday, which meant there were not many amenities regarding the hotel as they only open the restaurant leading into the weekend and booking in is strictly between 10 am and 4:00pm with somebody managing the front desk, or you have to phone to get somebody to let you in. We were a bit concerned that the hotel was unmanned overnight, it might not have been but that's what it felt like. The room itself was very nice and clean; there wasn't any view other than the alleyway below and the rooftops of the business cross the way. When we were going to bed we found out that the headboard was not properly attached to the bed which meant moving the bed away from the wall and the towel rail in the bathroom fell off when reaching for the towel. We wanted to report this so we went back to the hotel after having our breakfast just after 10:00 and waited to the quarter past but the front door was never opened and we could see that somebody was waiting to get in, as we had a long drive ahead of us, we had to leave without Informing the hotel of the above. Would I stay again probably not.

This is a centrally located hotel, with lovely elegant rooms that are warm and welcoming. Unfortunately, the hotel cafe was closed for renovations whilst I was trying. But there are plenty of alternatives within a block or two walking distance.

2/10 Poor

The room was stuffy and very hot. The air con was not working correctly. I was moved to another room. I encountered the same problem in this room. I was told that “it was a hot day”. I drew their attention that it was only 22° outside and the room was set at 17° and it was much much hotter. I was then moved to a much smaller room and assured that the air-conditioner was brand-new which indeed it did seem to be. This room however was very small, had a tiny window and was facing the baking afternoon and the bathroom was like an oven. On stretching out on the bed the old headboard clattered as it was not fixed to the wall. I thought I’d make a cup of coffee to find that there was only instant coffee, and no coffee pod machine. There was no curtain above the bathroom let alone any blackout curtains. This establishment brands itself as a Napier‘s finest five star. I had booked and paid for three nights, but was so tired and had become so disillusioned that this hotel would not be able to resolve the problem despite doing their best, and I had wasted so much time I checked out and found another hotel nearby, which was efficient, cool, and with a lovely sea breeze and view. Overall the experience was wanting, the place seemed very very empty and desolate. If you like the old character and history, it may be of interest to you, but it lacks the basic amenities for any hotel let alone one that brands itself five star.

A superb location, and a beautiful historic building. Add to that a very comfortable room and great hospitality, and they have a winning formula. This is a boutique hotel, that doesn’t have every service (eg: breakfasts) but they are very transparent on that, and helpful about finding those amenities. Angela was a wonderful host! And you feel like you’re living in a 1930s Napier art deco world!
