Upon check in, the person at the from desk was, from what we could tell, part of the cleaning staff. We are used to personal greetings from management in Key West and a warm welcome. This was nothing like that at all. She was rubbing her eyes as she was telling us very little about the property and seem very disinterested and bored. Not a warm welcome at all! The property itself is poorly maintained and it looks like Moe, Larry and Curley do the maintenance. The hot tub needs a refinishing, trim on the building was rotting, decking needs to be replaced and refinished. We stayed in the Harry Truman room and it was subpar (considered what we paid) compared to other guest houses in the area. The shower was TINY, water pressure was sub-par and there was dirt and mold on the ceiling of our rooms. To top it off, Author’s is located on busy White Street and you can hear all the noise through the old windows which offered no noise insulation at all. The hall was noisy anytime anyone closed a door and it just felt like an old Motel 6. Breakfast was subpar as well, unless you like cold cereal, oatmeal, bagels and danish. I’ve been coming to Key West for years and this by far was the worst guesthouse we’ve ever stayed. Don’t let the pictures online fool you.
