After doing a tuk-tuk tour of Soweto early in my South Africa visit, I decided that I MUST spend at least one night there before flying back home. With so much of the heart & history of the nation residing there, it is a place that should be on every traveler's list. The Nthateng B&B couldn't be more centrally located to the main tourist attractions, just a block off of Vilakazi Street (Soweto's "golden mile" if you will), and just around the corner from Nelson & Winnie Mandela's old house (now a museum). My rental car was secure behind the property gate, which was my only real security concern.... as it would be anywhere in SA. Nthateng could not have been a more gracious host, providing information and insight on the area, while also cooking up a delicious breakfast and making me feel right at home. I was also happy to find that the Soweto Brewing Company beer garden is just about a 10 minute walk away, although it seems that it is only open during the daytime. I always felt safe walking around during the day and in the evening, although you might have to fend off a few annoying (but not threatening) panhandlers on the main tourist street. The next time I come, I will definitely stay with Nthateng and I hope to see even more African-owned business thriving in this incredible & friendly community. The only negative was that the water was shut off on my last afternoon before going to the airport, so I was unable to shower before a very long flight. But otherwise, fantastic.
