We were emailed and invited to a bargain (50RM) taxi pick-up from the airport, and then met at the hotel for a personal introduction to the town and tourist attractions. This made us immediately warm to the hotel.
Our room (orange) was spacious and had most mod-cons, plus some luxuries, such as Blu-Ray player and Denon stereo. Sadly, it wouldn't read our flash drives and the movie selection was limited, so we didn't use it. Complimentary mini-bar items were nice, but espresso coffee (not instant Nescafe) would have been better. Given that the hotel is a conversion from an historic shop house there were some oddities to the layout: such as walking down a private and partially open corridor, then some steps, to get to the bathroom made for an midnight adventure. Lovely power shower though, with rain and hose type both available. We had a balcony, but it was unusable given the sweaty heat, the noisy and decrypted alley below, and the blank wall view right outside.
The high tech security system was both reassuring and a worry (why was it needed?)
The hotel suffered in part from the very location that made it convenient: namely its right in GeorgeTown, which means no sidewalks and open drains, with accompanying traffic, precarious walking routes, rats and the smell of sewers. All part of the 'charm' and 'colour' of Peneng, but incongruous with the charming hotel. It seems unfair to judge a hotel by its neighbourhood, especially as that was the reason to stay there, but ...
