My wife and I do quite a bit of travelling. We have stayed at hi-end hotels in the past, but usually target good hotels for a value. This hotel was one of our favorites in all our travels, bar none. It was a diamond in the rough. I will tell you right away that the hotel does need some repair and some updating. But as other reviewers have said, once you are there, it is very easy to overlook the maintenance issues. This hotel has perhaps some of the greatest views you will see -- even comparing to the Swiss, Austria and German alps, the mountains of Norway, the Rockies, and more. We came across another couple at this hotel from the UK who had travelled extensively throughout Costa Rica. They shared their photos. Nothing throughout Costa Rica came close to this hotel. If you want to go on world class hikes, this is the place. On the property is a hiking trail that leads to a 500 foot waterfall. You can hike to the top of the mountain and see some of the most amazing views. You will see wildlife like you have never seen: Insects that seemingly came out of a prehistoric times. Sounds from the jungle that mesmerize. The food, beer and wine were absolutely excellent. Saving the best for last: The host. Jourgen Pohlam made our trip extra special. He has a very warm heart. I've never felt so welcomed by hotel owner in my life. He is extremely interesting to talk to. He is a very kind human being. He made this an exceptional stay at a very good price. Thank you.
Property was georgeous! Staff was welcoming! owner was gracious and generous with cooking meals everyday!
We have never stayed at a property quite like Portal de la Montana. It is set in Costa Rica’s rainforest hills and we stayed in a bungalow with a spring fed pool right outside our front window. The back deck gave us a panoramic view of the mountains beyond, low clouds sweeping the landscape. We loved the bamboo fenced outdoor shower! The king size bed was really comfortable and the overhead fan was all we needed to keep us cool at night. We stayed for a week and enjoyed getting to know the owner and staff. Juergen does most of the cooking and we enjoyed his delicious meals every day. We spent most evenings sitting out sipping wine, meeting other guests. This is the place to go if you enjoy the outdoor life. There are so many different birds and butterflies everywhere! There are hiking trails on the property and horses available to ride. We fell in love with Blancita, the house dog, who loves everyone and liked to accompany us on hikes. It was hard to leave and we are already planning our next trip!
You Need 4wd, it’s not possible without it. The property is rustic, if you want a more authentic visit to CR this is a good place to book. Conversely if you are looking to be pampered this probably isn’t the one. Jurgen, the proprietor, is a friendly and gracious host. Staff are all locals from the mountain. You’re only an hour and a half to Manuel Antonio national park if you want to see a monkey or if you want a day at the beach (or two)
We loved everything about our stay here. I felt like we were saying goodbye to family when leaving.
You need a doble tracvion car to arrive to the hotel
Amazing property surrounded by lush greenery and misty mountains. Juergen our host was extremely attentive and always around to answering any questions and provide any assistance with regards to transportation or suggestions of activities. Food and drinks were fabulous. Being here was a treat of a lifetime. Will return at the first opportunity I have
Overall its a great place for rest and relaxation which was my primary goal. The staff is friendly and helpful and Jürgen the owner is quite the host. My only issue was after a storm, the power went out briefly and no flashlight or candles were available. The food was excellent and the grounds are perfect for hiking and horseback riding.
the villa was huge & so unique. very private nestled in nature. Jergen & Cecily were great hosts - felt like old friends & interesting to talk to. WARNING - getting to property is tricky & exiting was difficult to manage the steep terrain. also, 150 steps to walk to our accommodations - must be up for the task. saw more variety of birds than anywhere else in CR.
