The “ocean view” was a view of a concrete pool at the neighboring property, where loud drills and power washers operated all day, making relaxation impossible. This hotel, like much in San Pancho, is overrated and overpriced — and overrun by foreign tourism that drives prices up and pushes out local people. The town of San Pancho was crowded with gringos and expensive boutique shops. The beach was overcrowded and unpleasant. San Pancho, I have heard, was once pleasant and “off the beaten path.” No more: like Tulum and other once-charming beach destinations, it’s been overrun by tourist hordes. Beating back stiff competition from Cozumel, this is the worst and most touristy place I’ve ever stayed in Mexico.
